What Happens At The SP Office Stage

After the local police verify your details, your file goes to the SP office for a final review. This stage is visible on your application status. It means the district police are now examining your passport verification file.

At the SP office, a police officer verify your file. They review the report sent by your local police station. The officer cross-checks this information against your passport application details.

If everything is in order, the SP office marks your police verification as clear. It then submits the report to the Passport Office. This is done through an online system connecting the police and passport authorities. Your Passport Seva tracking status updates to show that the police report was submitted.

If any issue is found, the SP office marks the report incomplete or adverse. If an older address was not verified, the report may be marked incomplete. The SP office might return these cases to the local police for follow-up checks. This can delay your passport until the issues are resolved.

When Your Passport File Reaches The SP Office

When local police verification is complete, your file moves to the next stage. The police station sends the report to the SP office in your district. This means your passport file has reached the SP office for review.

You can see this update on the Passport Seva portal. The status message changes when the SP office receives your file. It might say that your police report is under review at the SP office.

At this stage, you do not need to do anything new. The verification process continues internally among the police and passport officials. You simply wait while the SP office completes its review of your application.

What You Need To Do At This Stage

There is no new paperwork or appointment for you during the SP office stage. You do not need to visit any office or submit more forms now.

You should monitor your application status on the Passport Seva portal. Check the status regularly to know when this verification is done. Also, be sure to stay reachable by phone or email. Officials might contact you if they need any clarification.

  • Check your application status on the Passport Seva portal regularly.
  • Keep your phone on and nearby in case officials call you.
  • Respond promptly if you get any call or email about your application.
  • Wait for the status update after the SP office completes its review.
  • If your status remains unchanged for long, contact the Passport Seva helpline or ask your local police for an update.

What Officers Check At The SP Office

The SP office stage is about re-checking the verification done by local police. A main focus is your address information. Officers confirm that your current address was verified properly by the police station. If you had other recent addresses, they confirm those were checked too.

They also cross-check your personal details. They compare the details in the police report with your passport application. This includes checking that your name, date of birth, and other personal data match.

Officers at the SP office review the report for any negative or adverse notes. They check if the local police mentioned any criminal record or pending court case. If any such issue appears, the SP office marks the report as adverse.

The SP office also checks that the police report is complete. All required fields and signatures must be present. If any information is missing or unclear, officers may return the report for clarification.

Police Visit Or Call For Address Check

As part of the passport process, a local police officer will verify your address. The officer must confirm that you live at the address you provided. They might visit your home for this check. In some cases, you may be asked to come to the police station instead.

During the verification, the police officer will ask for proof of identity and address. You should show original documents for ID and address proof. For example, you can present your Aadhaar card, voter ID, or an electricity bill. The officer may talk to your neighbors to confirm you live at that address.

If you are not home when the police visit, they will try to reach you. The officer may call you to schedule a new meeting. They might also ask you to come to the station. You must respond and cooperate with the police verification to avoid delays. This address check must be completed for your passport to be granted.

Rules For Adults And Minors

Passport police verification works a bit differently for adult and minor applicants. Anyone under 18 is considered a minor in passport rules. Adults are verified directly by the police. For minors, a parent or guardian is involved, and some verification steps might be waived if a parent holds a valid passport.

Adults

An adult passport applicant must personally go through the police verification. The police verify the adult’s address and identity face-to-face. The applicant should be present during the police visit. They need to provide their original documents for verification.

For adults with multiple addresses in the past year, police will verify each address. The police conduct separate verification for each location. Adults must show valid ID and address proof documents to the officer during verification.

Minors

For a minor applicant, a parent or guardian handles the police verification. The child may not need to be present if they are very young. The officer verifies the minor’s address and identity through the parent.

If a parent holds a valid passport at the same address, a minor’s passport can be issued without pre-police verification. In other words, some minors get their passports without waiting for police clearance first. If a police check is done for a minor, it focuses only on confirming the address.

Normal Files And Tatkaal Files

Passport applications can be processed in normal or Tatkaal mode. Normal processing follows the routine verification timeline. Tatkaal is an expedited service for urgent passports, and requires an additional fee. In the normal process, police verification is done before printing the passport. In the Tatkaal (urgent) process, the passport is issued faster and police verification is done afterward.

Normal Files

In a normal passport application, the passport office waits for police verification to finish before granting the passport. The local and district police verification must be completed and marked clear. Only then is the passport printed and dispatched.

This makes the normal process take longer than Tatkaal. Most fresh passport applications under the normal scheme require pre-issue police verification. Only certain cases, like some government employees with specific certificates, get passports without waiting for police verification. In a normal application, you have to complete police verification before the passport is issued.

Tatkaal Files

Under the Tatkaal scheme, passports are issued on a post-police verification. This means the passport is granted without waiting for police clearance first. The applicant pays an extra fee for the expedited Tatkaal service. They also provide additional proof of identity (such as a verification certificate) to qualify.

In Tatkaal, the passport is printed within days without waiting for the police report. The police verification still occurs, but it happens after you have received the passport. Tatkaal shifts the police check to the post-issuance stage. If any issue comes up during the later police verification, the passport office will address it separately.

Status Shown On Passport Seva

You can track your application’s progress through status updates on the Passport Seva portal. The system shows specific messages during police verification. These messages tell you if your file is with the local police, at the SP office, or back at the Passport Office.

For example, during verification you might see a status like “Pending for physical police verification at your local police station.” This means the file is waiting for the local police visit. Later, another status might read that the police report was sent to the SP office for review. When the SP office forwards the report, the status updates again to show it was submitted to the passport office.

After a successful police verification, the portal shows final statuses. It may say that your application is granted and printing of the passport has begun. A message will indicate the police verification is clear and the passport is being issued. If there is an issue (for example, an incomplete or adverse report), the status will mention it and the passport issuance is put on hold.

What Happens After The SP Office Stage

If the police verification is clear, the passport office moves forward with your application. The status will update to show that your passport is granted and being printed. Shortly after printing, your passport is dispatched to your address. You will also receive an SMS or email when the passport is sent out.

If there was any issue in the verification, the passport is not granted immediately. The passport office may keep your application on hold. They might ask for extra documents or request another police verification (re-check). In such cases, the passport will be issued only after the concerns are resolved.
